about
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

  1. This cresent shaped Island measures 224 kilometers (140 miles) in length and varies in width from 6.5 to 64.5 kilometers (4 to 40 miles).
  2. The Provincial Motto is: Parva sub ingenti (The small under the protection of the great).
  3. There are three counties: Prince, Queens and Kings.
  4. Summer day time temperatures range from 20 to 32 degrees C. (70 to 90 degrees F) Low humidity and a cool breeze makes perfect shirt sleeve weather.
  5. Winter temperatures range from -3 to -11 degrees C. (26 to 11 degrees F) Perfect conditions for a variety of winter sports.
  6. The Provincial emblems are: Flower - Lady's Slipper, Bird - Blue Jay, Tree - Red Oak.
  7. The three scenic routes are: The Lady Slipper Drive, The Blue Heron Drive and The Kings Byway.
  8. There are over 5200 Kilometers (3100 miles) of roads. We have more kms/miles of paved roads per capita that any other Canadian province.
  9. The total population is over 138,000.
  10. Over 1,000,000 visitors came to P.E.I. last year.
  11. Over 60 varieties of potatoes are grown on approximately 100,000 acres of farmland.
  12. At least 38 million pounds of cultured mussels are harvested from Island waters yearly.
  13. There are two french fry processing plants on P.E.I., Cavendish Farms and McCains.
  14. North Cape has one of the longest natural rock reefs in the world. There are actually two reefs, 200 feet apart and at low tide, one can walk out one mile on these reefs.
  15. Stompin' Tom Conners, the famous Canadian singer, lived his early years on P.E.I.
  16. There are more than fifty lighthouses on P.E.I.
  17. The first car ferry crossed the strait in 1917. It carried 750 people and a dozen rail cars.
  18. The MV Abegweit "I" operated from 1947 until 1982. After it's retirement, it became a floating restaurant in Chicago, IL. The MV Abegweit "II" operated from 1982 until the closing of the CN Ferry system in 1997.
